This business was created to fill what I saw as a gaping hole in school safety. As you know all schools are required to have Evacuation Maps posted in all rooms where staff and students may be, however there are very few that actually have an effective safety map beyond the primary and alternate routes out of the school. In my personal opinion school Evacuation Maps should include all safety related items (locations of fire extinguishers, fire alarm pulls, heart defibrillators, eye wash stations, first aid, emergency shutoff of gas, water and electric, tornado shelter locations, the list goes on) Most people say "well I've been here a long time, we train the students regularly and I know where everything is". But what about the substitute teacher? Maybe she's never been on that campus and who knows if the kids will direct her in a true emergency situation.

 

And I don't know if the school goes over evacuation procedures for the sub on the day he/she arrives, most likely not. So a clear concise map that shows everything safety related at a moments notice is crucial. We never know when an emergency is going to happen, so it's better to be prepared long before a situation occurs. Another selling point... In many districts, they all have maps, however they all vary campus to campus. The primary route may be red on one campus but green in another. My maps are consitant, same colors, same styles and same legend thought out all campuses. The reason for that is so that the staff/students can go to any campus and be able to read the map at a moments notice. Consitant maps from K-12. I feel it's easier for the kiddos as they advance from campus to campus.

After all maps have been created, you will receive pdf images of all maps for you to print out at your leisure. Part of my service will include making any minor revisions at no additional cost, as time goes on (splitting one room into two, showing moved safety items, blocked doors or obsolete exits, etc.) While working with Midway, they completed the FBI background check and fingerprinting. At the completetion of all remapping, all Master Evacuation Maps pdf's are forwarded to all local First Responders in the area. Since most all have computers in their vehicles I think it's a great idea that they have electronic maps they can utilize in an emergency situation.
